Emergency Notifications

Campus Safety will notify the campus community upon confirmation of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees occurring on the campus. Emergencies may range from inclement weather, hazardous spills, to a major earthquake that causes building evacuations to campus closures. The College has a variety of tools to communicate with the public in the event of these and other possible emergencies.

Website

The website is updated with information during actual emergencies or campus closures.

Campus Intercom System

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The VoIP system will be used for emergencies when the evacuation alarm system cannot be sounded as in a "shooter/intruder" on campus situation. It will also be used to provide information when other emergencies or incidents occur.

College Group Email

During emergencies, College of the Redwoods sends an "urgent" group e-mail to every student and faculty and staff member when the email address is provided. The message directs individuals to the emergency web site for additional information and instructions.

The College of the Redwoods Campus Safety Officers provides safety for persons and property on campus, responds to emergency situations, assist in medical emergencies and other related safety needs, as well as enforce campus parking regulations. Campus Safety Officers have the authority to ask persons for identification and to determine whether individuals have lawful business at College of the Redwoods. Campus Safety Officers have the authority to issue parking citations.

In the case of an emergency call 911 or our emergency line x4111. If a situation does not actually rise to the level of an imminent emergency, students, faculty, staff, and visitors may speak to one of our officers by calling the office at 707-476-4112.

Campus Safety oversees the reporting and investigation of all criminal incidents on the campus and strongly encourages all victims to make timely reports. Campus Safety officers are non-sworn, but are authorized to make a Public Citizen's arrest according to California Penal Code § 837.  It states that a private person may arrest another:

  1. For a public offense committed or attempted in his presence.
  2. When the person arrested has committed a felony, although not in his presence.
  3. When a felony has been in fact committed, and he has reasonable cause for believing the person arrested to have committed it.

Persons committing these criminal violations on campus are reported (arrested if necessary), and given to the local police agency for prosecution through the criminal justice system. In case of an emergency that poses a threat to the safety and well-being of those on campus, the police are immediately notified and CR Campus Safety plays a support role to their efforts.

The CR Campus Safety maintains a positive working relationship with the law enforcement agencies where we have campuses or sites located. Criminal incidents are referred to the local law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction on the campus. All crime victims and witnesses are strongly encouraged to immediately report the crime to Campus Safety and the appropriate law enforcement agency.

The federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act , otherwise known as the Clery Act, applies to certain crimes reported to the police and other College officials known as Campus Security Authorities (CSA). The Act defines CSA’s as mandated crime reporters. As such, CSA’s are required to report any Act qualifying crimes that they are made aware of to the College of the Redwoods Public safety Department. Timely reporting of crimes is encouraged and sometimes required. Public Safety will use the submitted information to verify the appropriate crime classification and to compile statistics to be included in the Annual Security Reports that College of the Redwoods publishes and distributes each fall.

If a crime has recently occurred, or you need assistance with information on this form please notify the Public Safety Department as soon as possible at (707) 476‐4554 to assist and additionally decide if a timely warning needs to be generated.

The Clery Act Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 established a minimum standard for the disclosure of campus crime statistics. Current report below:
